HOUMA, La. — A 6-foot-3, 265-pound man says a restaurant overcharged him for his trips to the buffet line, then banned him and a relative because they're hearty eaters. A spokesman for the restaurant denies the claim. Ricky Labit, a disabled offshore worker, said he had been a regular for eight months at the
Manchuria Restaurant in Houma, eating there as often as three times a week. On his most recent visit, he said, a waitress gave him and his wife's cousin, 44-year-old Michael Borrelli, a bill for $46.40, roughly double the buffet price for two adults. "She says, 'Y'all fat, and y'all eat too much,"' Labit said. Labit and Borrelli said they felt discriminated against because of their size. "I was stunned, that somebody would say something like that. I ain't that fat, I only weigh 277," Borrelli said, adding that a waitress told him he looked like he had a "baby in the belly." Houma accountant Thomas Campo said the men were charged an extra $10 each because they made a habit of dining exclusively on the more expensive seafood dishes, including crab legs and frog legs. "We have a lot of big people there," said Campo, who spoke for owner Li Shang, whose English is limited. "We don't discriminate."
Labit denied ever being told he would be asked to pay more than the standard adult price. The argument grew heated, and police were called. The police report states, "The incident was settled when the management advised that the bill was a mistake and, to appease Ricky, the meal was complimentary." Labit said he insisted on paying but was told not to come back. He complained that when seafood on the buffet line runs out, the restaurant only grudgingly cooks more. Campo said the proprietress tries to reduce waste of quality food, he said. "Food is for eating, not toys for your child," reads a sign posted on a wall in typewritten text. A handwritten addition reads "Or 20% added."
Commentary? What do you think about this? I have been to buffets many times, and I know most people go there to eat a lot. In my humble experience, I believe it would take some serious abuse to reach the point where people get kicked out. What do you think about somebody being tossed out of a buffet restaurant? What about the fact that those two guys think that they are not that fat when they both weigh around 275 lbs.? Are they in denial??

Hey there spidey... Long time no see...
I think with food buffets the proprieters should just suck it up... there must be so many people that go and only eat enough to feed a sparrow but pay full price.. I know I have paid mega bucks to take my two very fussy children out only to have them hardly want anything...
I think it is a bit harsh how they were treated... discrimination and all...
but hey..thats life.. and life sux...
I agree with Wanna, if they offer "all you can eat" they should abide by that and take it into account when fixing their pricing.
Irrespective of been fat or not the restaurant appear to be discrimminating.
People don't go to buffet type restaurants to eat sparringley, they should provide what they advertise.
I'm surprised soebody who is overweight doesn't realise they are fat though.
I wonder about them not knowing they're fat, maybe it's the word they don't like. A lot of people don't use the word "fat". They are, "a little overweight", "big", "heavy", "large", "chunky", or other words that sound nicer than "fat". If they don't use the word to describe themselves, they surely don't want someone else using the word to describe them. And if the restaurant owners think some foods are too expensive, they can offer those foods less often, not limit their patrons on the amount they can consume.
Hea, I'm in! Last time your blog door had me locked out.
Though it's been customary among the media to blame fast food for the obesity epidemic, by far the worst cases of obesity I see are at the all-you-can-eat buffet joints. I can almost see why these 250+ pounders would think they're not fat in comparison with some of the really morbidly obese people I see there.
Sorry it couldn't have been a better year for your Dolphins. At least my Wolverines ended up on a high note.
I don't think they should throw someone out of a buffet or charge them more. It is all you can eat like they adverstise. If they can't afford providing a lot of seafood then then they shouldn't.
As for the guy saying he is not that fat. Yeah, maybe a little denial. I think that most people know they are fat but maybe don't want to be called that word.
Hope you are having a Happy new year! And way to go for our Seahawks here....we'll see how far they can go!
Buffets are bad news for almost everyone. Except this one little Indian buffet in the middle of a my grandfather's neighborhood in Oklahoma City. I think they are literally the only Indian family in OKC. It's so yummy ... and too spicy for lots of trips back.
Anyway, I've been gone for about forever, but I'm back now. How's it going?
"All you can eat" means just that. Charging someone extra because they ate more than the usual patron is false advertising.
I don't think 277lbs is fat for a 6'3 man.
Whenever i go to all you can eat buffets, i eat one dinner plate or two small plate fulls. Any more than that, and i know i'm being a pig.
I have noticed that not every buffet restaurant is the same. The one that are big and popular do not care how much one or two people over-eat. I usually will eat three or four plates of food when I go to a buffet. I have not been to one in at least one year.
The small places that are also usually crappy, will often have the owner or someone else literally standing around the buffet giving people glare when they come back for the second or third plate. I can see that some small buffet might be on a low profit margin and a couple of big fat guys coming in 3 times a week will put such a place out of business.
I am also guessing that because these guys were going 3 times a week that there were probably some other obnoxiousness and friction issues that were not in the news report but that might have contributed to them getting kicked out.
I guess I am in the minority here, because I think that they probably deserved to get tossed.
Dropped by the other day but you were having a private party and I wasn't invited. As one of your biggest fans (no pun intended) I was very hurt. ;P
About the restaurant thing: sorry, but if you open up an all you can eat restaurants in a country with an obesity epidemic you deserve what you get
I don't do buffets too often and when I do, I can rarely manage more than one plate, even if I want to.
Do you think Michael Moore knows he's overweight? Someone should break the news to him.
Happy New Year by the way!!!
Is that one of the guys? He looks like Michael Moore, lol. I don't know if they should be kicked out. I don't know anything about the restaurant business. It seems to me that buffets are likely to attract big eaters.
Wasn't there some joke or scene from a comedy sketch or cartoon about an owner of a Chinese buffet scolding (or refusing to serve) some tubbies?
when i go to a buffet i am so paranoid about people thinking i eat like a pig that i actually eat way less!!!!!!! however - my skinny arse friends ALWAYS have a "who can eat the most plates of dessert before we barf?" competition!
go figure hey?
