Chicken Soup and Stress

Dead Fat Celebrity Winner is: John Candy, with 15 votes! Elvis Presley came in second place with 7 votes, and Chris Farley, John Belushi, and Curly Howard each had six votes for a third place tie. All the other dead fat celebrities were bunched up at around four votes. James Coco, Chris Penn, and Kirby Puckett got zero votes. No love for them!

Chicken soup is not just good for the soul, but also good for the body! If you are dieting, working out, or trying to be a bodybuilder, an occasional dose of chicken soup may give your immune system the boost it needs to get to the next level! Chicken soup is not low calorie if you have it with all the fixings (noodles, potatoes, chicken, pumpkin, etc.), but if you just drink the broth or broth with chicken, it can be a very powerful, nutritious, and low-calorie diet food! Back when I was working at ShiFu Pharmacy, there was a security guard at Dadeland Mall who lost about eighty pounds drinking chicken broth. Every night he would buy two cans of chicken broth (no noodles) and he drank that cold from the can because he had no place to microwave it. He was dedicated to his plan and determined to lose weight!

Scientists have confirmed that chicken soup has medicinal properties that help cure the common cold, flus, and inflammation. At my home, chicken soup is made about once or twice a month. Chicken soup always gives my immune system a noticeable boost. In addition to the positive effects on the immune system, a hearty home-made chicken soup is also full of tons of vitamins and protein! Yesteday I had some of Mom's home-made chicken soup; and afterwards I went to the gym and I did 25 sets of Curls (8-12 reps per set). Thanks to the chicken soup, I felt stronger, and and I had extra pep and what seemed like super-human strength. I did curls with the 70 pound barbell. I would have lifted 80 but there was somebody else using it, and I did not want to have to put the beat-down on him. Since I was chicken-soup-enhanced, I knew it would not be a fair fight. Chicken soup is like healthy, natural steroids. While something like Progresso soup or Campbell's probably has some diluted chicken essence; the best kind of chicken soup that you can eat is the home-made kind. With real chicken chunks and vegetables. When you have home-made chicken soup, you can taste and feel the power of natural proten and vitamins. It has a positive effect on me. The canned soups taste watery compared to home-made chicken soup! You put in fresh chicken and vegetables when making it at home. No preservativves or other bizarre chemicals. The home-made soup is easily ten times more potent than canned soup. Chicken soup will make a super-man or super-woman out of you! It will give you extra endurance power so that you last longer at anything that you do.

Stress Makes You Fat! Scientists published a study on mice which shows that weight gain depended upon the levels of two peptides in a physiological pathway, which controls the growth rate of fat and the size of fatty cells. According to Zofia Zukowska, M.D., Ph.D., professor and chair of the Department of Physiology & Biophysics, one peptide is a neurotransmitter (neuropeptide Y, or NPY) and the other is the receptor (neuropeptide Y2 receptor, or Y2R) which activates in two types of cells in the fat tissue: endothelial cells lining blood vessels and fat cells themselves.

When mice used in the study were stressed, both peptides increased and the mice gained significantly more fat than the control mice that did not experience stress although they used the same amounts of high fat diet. Researchers found that when stressed, mice not only gained fat, but also exhibited metabolic disorders. “They had the glucose intolerance seen in diabetes, elevated blood pressure, inflammation in the blood vessels, and fat in their livers and muscles,” said Lydia Kuo, a medical student who earned her Ph.D. in physiology due to work on the study.

The more significant part of the study is that the researchers found some chemicals that can be used to remove fat or grow fat on particular parts of the body, such as removal of abdominal fat by injecting the chemicals to block Y2R. When the excessive fat, gone is also metabolic syndrome. The results of the study could lead to some obvious applications in cosmetics, if not immediately in medicine or health. Fat loss patches could be applied to specific areas of the body to help reduce fat. Human testing is expected to begin in two years.

Interestingly enough, I made chicken and dumplings for dinner last night (emphasis on chicken and broth, not many dumplings) with spinach on the side. I have been dealing with more stress than normal lately, which, despite my efforts, seem to have stalled my weightloss. I am exploring other avenues of destressing as well - and continue eating in a healthy manner. I can testify to the effects of stress and weight loss/gain.

Re: Fight Girls - most of the fighting happens in the last 10-15 minutes of the show. The rest of it is pure soap opera. If you've ever taken a martial arts class though, the real schools insist on military-like respect for the instructors. Men are addressed as Mister So-and-So, women as Miss So-and-So and instructors over a certain degree of black belt are referred to as "Master". Master Toddy qualifies (as his website shows) as Master.

Thanks for checking in on me. It's been a bit rough lately.

wow that security guard was really dedicated. I don't think I could drink cold chicken broth. yuck! But I do agree the chicken soup is good for you. I have a lot of stress too, but I am getting better at dealing with it..I think!?

There is no way I could drink cold chicken broth. Chicken soup does work well on a diet plan. It can be modified with different ingredients depending on the focus of your diet.

If you are in a hurry the chicken soup at Chic-Fil-A is good.

Did you say 25 sets of curls. I wouldn't be able to wipe for a month after that workout.

The studies on fat cells being part of our endocrine system is fascinating also. How is the calorie counting going?

Way to go on the working out! And chicken soup is mmmm, mmmm, good. I do like that homemade soup but alas I'm not too much of a cook. I've got me few staples/recipes though. But every once in a while when visiting mom, I'll get some good homemade soup.
Yeah, the link between stress and getting fatter, I have experienced that in the past for sure.

I have tried a new thing in the past few months. If I am experiencing stress I eat less food as a way to motivating my body to get back to normal. Hunger is a good motivator. Feel better brain or no food. It kind of has a ring to it like lose weight or die!!!

Captain, you are getting power from the dark side! No matter what anyone says, the dark side can be good.

As far as the cold soup is concerned, if the world were not so fast paced, I would have let the guy heat his soup in our microwave in the back. Unfortunately, the supervisors never allowed for such niceties!

Thick soup is the best, especially when some of the veggies have fallen apart to make the broth thicker and chunkier! On the other hand, when I have felt the flu coming on I have taken a cube of chicken soup concentrate and microwaved it into a cup of water and that has given me a lift too! Broth vs. Thick and Chunky! Maybe we should have a voting poll?

BTW, the picture of the chicken soup is the one my Mom made, that one was extra thick as she had put squash, potatoes, pumpkin, celery, carrots, and some green stuff, I think it was spinach. The photo of Mom is a bit blurry, I guess I should post a better one next time.

I have to get inspiration somewhere if I am going to post a pic without my shirt on in Sept. I have to start practicing my Al Jolson because when I hit 210 I am going to have a mp3 link to the captain singing standing on top of the world. Hopefully, the singing will be less painful than seeing me without my shirt on. Back to the gym!!!!

Yea White Rose there will probably be a study one day that says Chicken Soup increases your chances of getting (name your own disease here) by 75 percent.

But it's so freakin' hot here. And drinking cold broth doesn't appeal to me.

Actually, my immune system isn't too bad anyway. I haven't called in sick to work yet this year. And I could actually use a sick day.

I have a funny story on the chicken soup, maybe I'll tell you one day. There sure is nothing like your mum's cooking. Mmmm!

Having read your post, I'm inspired to make some hearty chicken soup. I'll start with Swanson's broth and add the rest of the stuff. I've never made the soup with all the extras, but adding rice and sweet potato and other goodies sounds like a great idea. I might even add some chicken.

I'm with you on the chicken soup issue! I make homemade soups weekly year round (usually in the crockpot), and chicken soup is high on the list. And when you make it yourself, you know just what's in it.

Have a great weekend!

When growing up, every week I had chicken soup that my mom made, and I still grew up as a fat kid. Maybe the trick was to drink it cold from a can.
